Green Glue installation is fast and dispenses with very little effort. No measuring or troweling is necessary.Use a standard (32oz) quart size caulk gun to apply. Green Glue will not flow off the board during installation. Application time is about 20-30 seconds per tube. It is not necessary to have complete coverage to obtain excellent results.

Important Application Tips:

Green Glue is Sticky: There is nothing harmful about Green Glue, but it is important to warn your installers that it can be tough to clean up, especially after it has dried. Take precautions such as drop cloths and latex gloves when using Green Glue. Take care to remove the Green Glue from unwanted surfaces before it dries. Products that clean well are Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil©, as well as citrus based solvents and cleaners such as Goof-Off©.

Green Glue Smell: Green Glue has a very slight smell. In the same way that you can smell paint while you are painting a room, you will be able to smell Green Glue as you are applying it. Most installers aren’t bothered by the smell, but it is nevertheless important to keep the room well ventilated to prevent a build-up of smell. Cold temperatures or high humidity will slow drying. Smell will not linger on furniture, clothing or carpeting. Like paint, once dry, the smell will fade. Keep the spent tubes in a plastic bag and remove them regularly.

Recommended Green Glue Coverage: The ideal coverage should be uniform throughout the sheet using 2 tubes. Applying 1 tube of Green Glue per 4’ x 8’ sheet will deliver about 70% of the performance of 2 tubes. Three tubes is optimal per 4’ x 8’ sheet will improve low-frequency performance around the primary resonance. We do not recommend using more than 3 tubes per sheet. If you use too much Green Glue, performance will decline.

Click here to calculate how much Green Glue you need.

Green Glue Drying Time: After applying Green Glue, do not let dry. Apply Green Glue within 15 minutes. Drywall sheets must be screwed together while the material is still wet. Allow Green Glue 30 days of drying time for optimal sound isolation performance. Because it needs to dry, Green Glue must be allowed 7 to 10 days drying time before sound isolation will start to improve. High humidity, cold temperatures and multiple drywall layers could slow the drying time considerably.

STEP 1:

Hang the first layer of drywall - After hanging the first layer of drywall, it is recommended that you seal the seams between sheets. This can be done with either acoustical sealant or drywall mud. If using acoustical sealant, take care not to use a bead so large that it protrudes outside the plane of the drywall, preventing the second layer from sitting flat. If speed is an issue, you can omit this step and seal the perimeter after the last sheet of drywall is installed.

STEP 2:

How to Install Green Glue - Figure 1Cut the end of the tube as shown in top left image.  Screw on separate nozzle and cut end leaving an opening of 3/8” or more. A larger tip opening can be used to speed application without concern for perfomance.

STEP 3:

How to Install Green Glue - Figure 2How to Install Green Glue - Figure 3Apply Green Glue to the second sheet of drywall on a clean, flat surface. Placing the drywall on saw horses will help prevent the board from getting damaged or dirty from laying it on the floor.

Apply the glue in large beads in a random pattern across the entire board.

Leave a 2-3” border with no Green Glue around the edge of the board. This will allow for better handling of the board.

Use 2 tubes per 4’x8’ sheet. (1 tube gives about 70% of the benefit of 2 tubes).

STEP 4:

How to Install Green Glue - Figure 4How to Install Green Glue - Figure 5How to Install Green Glue - Figure 6After applying Green Glue to the back of the second layer, raise the board into position, press the board against the wall or ceiling, and fasten in place using appropriate screws.

The Green Glue will squeeze into a thin layer (about 0.5 mm). The second layer must be hung and screwed within 15 minutes to prevent Green Glue from drying before it is in place.

Typical screw spacing is 16” oc for walls and 12” oc for ceilings, but be sure to follow all appropriate local building codes regarding screw type and spacing.

Use our Green Glue Noiseproofing Sealant to seal cracks and seams paying special attention to the crack where the drywall meets the floor as this doesn’t get taped and mudded.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
We've used Green Glue many times, some in new construction, most often when we're adding new sheet rock over existing sheet rock. Not only do we get a new, smooth surface to work with, but the Green Glue seems to give the double layered wall a real substantial, sound absorbing quality. I always get amused looks from the rockers, I'm sure they think I'm nuts while I'm applying the Green Glue. Sometimes it gets a bit runny before they get a chance to hang it in place, and it is a bit tough to get off your hands if it runs. The end result usually surprises the subs. Perhaps chilling the tubes before application might help keep it on the boards while they're being hung.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
When building my home studio I applied "Green Glue" between two sheets of 1/2 inch sheet rock as a sound damping treatment. While you can't expect it to remove all outside noise, it certainly did what it was supposed to do - reduce outside noise from penetrating through the sheet rock wall.

Did not provide the amount of soundproofing I expected. It did reduce sound enough to notice, but to eliminate sound it should be used with a cleat system that separates ceiling from Joists.

Good stuff. Made the client very happy. No measurements done, but with auto-deploy door bottoms and quality framing, sound isolation is excellent. The new construction including the Green Glue is by far the strong link in the chain. Strongly recommended.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
I had a shared wall (10.5 ft x 9 ft) between two bedrooms that was hollow with 24" stud spacing and half-inch drywall. I filled the hollow space with 50 lbs of cellulose, and then added a green glue/another half-inch drywall layer on both sides of the wall. I am happy with the level of soundproofing for only a one-inch increase in wall thickness. A TV volume level of 10 could be increased to 30 with the same amount audible in the adjacent room. I commissioned the original drywall and painting vendors for the house, and it is impossible to tell that the wall is not original to the house.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
Before installing the new carpet in a remodeled attic room in a vacated rental unit, I considered the complaints of the people living downstairs that they could hear everything that went on in that room. I considered all my options and decided that I get the biggest bang for my buck from using Green Glue. After purchasing an extra large caulking gun, and flooring sub-layment panels, the application was easy. The directions were clear and simple to follow. Since the panels had to be nailed into place within the setup time of the Green Glue, I rented a pneumatic nail gun. Once the sub-layment panels were all cut to size, my sons and I rapidly applied the Green Glue and nailed the panels into place. We installed the carpet the next day. The tenants downstairs no longer complain about sound, but I can still hear a little if I pay attention.

I used it on the ceilings and all walls of the new bedroom I built in the basement. It is amazing how quiet it is. Guests sleeping there are always commenting how well they slept! Highly recommend. Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
Every recipe is different, some have sugar, some add salt, but each studio build I design has layers of drywall and Green Glue between those layers. The results are in the final mix. People can hear the difference as the room comes together. Construction is important, attention to detail is important, and the materials are important. Green Glue is one of those materials, that if you're going to do it right, you use Green Glue.

Used this on a 2x6 wall between a media room and a bedroom, with R19 between. I only did double 5/8" sheetrock and Green Glue on one side of the wall (2 tubes per 8' sheet), but it did the trick! I can barely hear anything through the wall, including bass (though we don't crank it.) In my next project I would use this in even more places: along hallways, or even ceilings.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
This is an amazing product. I share a very thin wall with a neighbor in a NYC apartment building. I could listen to their conversations, their music, their TV shows. It was utterly annoying as I felt I had no privacy. Green glue was the cheapest and most efficient solution. I used Green Glue as explained, adding it to a second layer of dry wall. The result has been fantastic. I cannot listen to everyday noises from my neighbors' apartment. I gained privacy. It was totally worth the effort.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
I am writing this review about a specific project our drywall company took on using this product. Our customers home design laid out so that the parent's master bedroom wall was right up against their one young daughter's bedroom. As a loving couple, you can understand their concern about noise infiltration from their bedroom to their daughter's! We used Green Glue following the manufacturer's guidelines and the results were amazing. Our clients could make as much noise in their bedroom as they desired and it did not reach their daughter's room. I highly recommend this product.

Comments about Green Glue Damping Compound Tubes:
The only caveat is that the tubes are oversized and you will need a special caulk gun for application. I didn't have a large caulk gun, so I used a one inch dowel to extruded the product and it worked pretty well. Take care when applying, Green Glue is a bit messy, because it is designed to stay sticky or gummy after drying, any product dropped on a drop cloth will immediately cling to shoes etc. Of course the end result is worth it - this is a very easy and cost effective method for sound proofing.
