Home theaters and music rooms are the deep end of soundproofing. A TV wall or a noisy neighbor is one thing; a drum kit or a pair of 12" subwoofers is another, because low frequencies carry more energy and shrug off treatments that handle voices easily. The projects below run from a basement theater to full recording studios, and the same principles decide all of them.
Match the build to the loudness
For a home theater with normal listening levels, the assembly we recommend everywhere does the job: resilient sound clips and hat channel on walls and ceiling, insulation in the cavities, and two layers of 5/8" drywall with Green Glue between them, sealed with acoustical caulk. For drums, band practice and serious playback levels, the conversation moves to fully decoupled framing, the room-within-a-room. Several questions below walk through exactly that decision, including whether double walls are truly necessary for a drum studio (short answer: for real isolation, yes).
Low frequencies are the boss fight
Bass flows around light obstacles and shakes structure directly, which is why mass and decoupling matter more here than anywhere else on this site. Skimping on the second drywall layer or stretching Green Glue coverage thin shows up first in the low end. If subwoofers are part of the plan, budget for full coverage and treat the ceiling and floor as seriously as the walls.
The room is only as quiet as its weakest opening
After the walls go quiet, sound finds the door, the window, the outlets and the ductwork. A music room needs a sealed, heavy door (our door guide covers it), windows either treated with a drywall barrier or backed with a sound curtain, putty pads on the electrical boxes, and honest thought about how air gets in and out. Watch the triple leaf effect when adding layers inside an existing room; more layers with trapped air gaps can perform worse than fewer.
Isolation is not acoustics
Two different jobs: the assemblies above keep sound in the room; absorption panels make the room sound good inside. A studio needs both, but confusing them is the most expensive mistake in this category. Foam on the walls will not keep drums out of the bedroom upstairs.

Do I really need double walls for a drum studio?
Customer question: Hello, I'm building a drum studio with double walls, the draftman who has drawn up plans for this has said that the building needs to have a sheet of 2.4x1.2m plywood or gib inserted on each of the 4 corners of the building inside the wall cavity to meet building code and brace the building so it will stand up (because of the exterior cladding that I am using), my question is will this compromise the double wall system? Clips and hat channel for a music room - am I planning it right?
Customer question: Am building a music room/recording studio and we are planning on using RSIC clips w/hat channel plus 2 sheets 5/8' drywall. By my calculations, this will result in 2 7/8' between face of studs and surface of drywall. For lightswitches/outlet receptacles, how do we 'extend' those out to be flush w/the finished wall? All the tutorials I could find on the website showed outlets being attached to studs as if sheathing were to be attached directly to studs as well. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks

How do I turn a backyard shed into a recording studio?
Customer question: I am building a sound proof recording studio in the out building/Oversize shed on my property. it is 14 x 14. the floor is currently hardwood in need of a new stain. I'll be sad to rip it up but I need it to be as sound proof as possible so the neighbors don't call the cops. the building has a cement foundation, your website shows in great detail how to sound proof a floor that is to a second floor, what about ground level ? I keep reading about U-Boats ? Suggestions ?
Trademark Soundproofing answer: You should not have that much of an issue if it is a slab to ground floor as long as you treat the walls and ceiling properly. If you want you can add a layer of plywood/OSB with Green Glue in between to the existing floor and then finish the floor.
Converting a garage into a mixing studio: does room-within-a-room work?
Customer question: Hi! I'm ready to convert a garage into a full mixing studio by using the room within a room method. From the outside in, there is 1/2in plywood with 2x4 studs, then another set of 2x4 studs (3 inches apart) with 2 layers of 5/8 drywall with green glue between layers. My question is that 2 of the 4 walls are exterior walls and I obviously want a thermal break using insulation but also reduce sound. I love spray foam as it totally seals the exterior wall cavity but don?t want it to hurt the sound attenuation. I was hoping to put unfaced r13 fiberglass insulation in the exterior wall cavity and put 1in insulation board (to fully seal for heat loss) over that. Then on the inner wall use faced r13 fiberglass. I?m just worried about the triple leaf effect, thank you!
Trademark Soundproofing answer: Hi Ryan. The foam board should not cause any triple leaf effect issues. If you would like to leave it out than spray foam the exterior walls and leave room for some fiberglass and add fiberglass insulation the the interior walls.
How do I keep a vocal booth quiet next to a band practice room?
Customer question: Hi, I have a small rom I intent to use as vocal recording. The room next to it is a practise room for a rock band and the bassguitar sound travels through the wall. I was advice on to put a 'light wall' infront the concrete wall. The light wall has 5cm gap from the concrete wall. The studs are 4,8x4,8 cm but the woodfiber insulation is 10 cm and its lend directrly to the concrete wall. On the other side of the wall is furring channels and 1 layer fiber drywall. The result is that the bass sound still travels. Any advice on what I can do? I also plan to build a small vocal booth about 137 cm from the concrete wall. Best regards Mira
Trademark Soundproofing answer: The low frequency of bass requires that you damp the wall and add more mass. Another layer or 2 of drywall with Green Glue Damping should do the trick.

Trademark Soundproofing answer: I would leave out the spray foam and just use 6 inches of standard insulation. Mass Loaded Vinyl on the studs. Resilient Sound Clips with Hat Channel. Skip the Quiet rock and just use 2 layers standard drywall with Green Glue.
How much Green Glue do I need for a subwoofer-heavy home theater?
Customer question: I will have 2 powerful 12' subwoofers with a 7.2 surround sound so I will opt to use 2.5 tubes per 8 foot sheet. I'm paranoid if I accidentally go over 3 tubes per 8 feet I will do more harm than good. I will be using whisper clips, standard 7/8 hat channel, 5/8 sheetrock, green glue and one more layer of 5/8 sheetrock. So if two tubes is 0.5 mm thick I'm sure 2.5 tubes isn't much thicker. Do I need to account for this extra thickness when adjusting light fixtures, electrical outlets and window/door jams.....and if so how much depth should I add. One customer on a Forum suggested adding 1/8 of an inch for the green glue. What are your thoughts? Thank you, Chris
Trademark Soundproofing answer: Hi Chris, No reason to get paranoid it won't do any harm it also won't to any extra good (once you go over 3 tubes). The GG takes up no add'l thickness that you need to account for other than the 2nd layer of drywall.
Building a home theater in a condo - where do I start?
Customer question: Great article! I have a finished room in which I am going to build a home theater. I'm in a condo. I wanted to add another studded wall, R-13 insulation, 2 layers of drywall w/ GG. Then I read about triple leaf effect. I really do not want to tear up the existing drywall to eliminate this effect, so what would be better: double stud wall with triple leaf effect or simply adding two layers of drywall with GG to the existing wall (for a total of 3 layers of drywall on interior side)?

Can an unfinished attic become a soundproofed home theater?
Customer question: Looking to convert unfinished attic to a home theater. Trying to figure out the best approach to reduce sound transmission (especially LFE with 4 large subwoofers) to the second floor where the bedrooms exist. Currently I have 2x10s for the joists, fiberglass insulation in-between, and an OSB subfloor. Would it be worth it to pull up the existing subfloor to replace fiberglass insulation with Rockwool AFB and add joist isolators before reinstalling the subfloor? If I install Rockwool between the joists, how thick should this be (one or two layers of 4' AFB)? Or would I be better off just installing green glue and a second layer of OSB for the floor (which I would do even if I pulled up the existing OSB)? Thank you in advance.
Trademark Soundproofing answer: For the insulation alone it would not be worth to pull up the floor. However for the Joist isolators it is worth it. 2 layers of 4' AFB plus 2 layers of subflooring with Green Glue in between over the joist isolators is the way to go.
How do I soundproof the wall between a home theater and a bedroom?

From the articles and conversation above, what I concluded best fit me is below. 1. Remove the wall 2. Add sound insulation. what is best a best insulation I can use? 3. Trademark Soundproofing answer: Fiberglass or Roxul insulation is fine. You need Hat channels that go into the clips Putty pads for the outlets and acoustical caulk at the perimeters.
How do we soundproof an outbuilding for band practice?
Customer question: Hi, I have an outbuilding that we're going to turn into a band room. The structure is clad entirely in 1/2' plywood. I was hoping to seal with acoustic caulk, frame out 16' (or 24') on center studs, insulate, then apply 2 layers of drywall green glued together. Does this seem like enough treatment such that the neighbors won't be annoyed by a drum kit and guitars being played inside the structure, assuming we have a soundproof door installed as well? Would an initial layer of drywall GGed to the plywood before frame-out make a huge difference if not? Thanks!

Better if you were able to decouple the wall as well (frame it a little away from the outer wall). Adding an additional layer to the outer wall will enhance the soundproofing as well and I would recommend it in a music room like yours.
How do I soundproof a window in a recording or voiceover studio?
Customer question: I am planning to soundproof a window in a voice over studio. I will be using a 5/8' drywall barrier, screwed to a 3/4' MDF panel and a final 1/2' drywall sheet. Can I use GG on both sides of the 3/4' mdf panel?
