What is Green Glue Sealant?

Proper acoustical sealing is a must in order to achieve the desired results in soundproofing. Green Glue Sealant is manufactured by the Green Glue Company and is the perfect seal for all your soundproofing projects. It used to fill gaps between walls and floors and around electrical outlets, light fixtures, windows, and doors. Anywhere there is a break in building material, acoustical sealant should be applied to stop sound from traveling through an open gap. It stops noise from leaking through joints, edges and baseplates and can be used on many surfaces such as wood, gypsum, concrete, glass, drywall, metal and plastic. The Sealant will remain soft and flexible when dry and is paintable once dried. Green Glue’s Noiseproofing Acoustical Sealant is simple to dispense and has an easy clean-up. It is highly trusted and recommended by builders, architects, contractors and DIY enthusiast.

Advantages and Features of Acoustical Sealant:

  • Soundproof - Prevents sound from leaking through joists and edges
  • Easy – Dispenses easily and remains soft and flexible when dry
  • Neat - Easy clean-up with soap and water
  • Multi-Purpose - Bonds to wood, concrete, glass, gypsum, metal and plastic

  • Tested – Independently tested by Underwriters Laboratory for environmental impact
  • Sustainable – Can help contribute in achieving points toward LEED certification
  • Effective – Validated by third-party laboratory testing
  • Safe - Low V.O.C. and Non-Toxic
  • Pleasant - No odor

Limitations of Acoustical Sealant:

  • Not a finishing product; standard mud and tape should be used.
  • Intended for noise mitigation in interior applications only.
  • Allow to dry 48 hours before finishing or painting.

Installation:

Green Glue’s Noiseproofing Acoustical Sealant is simple to dispense and clean-up. It stops noise from leaking through joints, edges and baseplates and can be used on many surfaces such as wood, gypsum and concrete. It is highly trusted and recommended by builders, architects, contractors and DIY enthusiast.

Sealant is applied with a standard quart sized caulking gun, which is available for sale on our site (see Acoustical Sealant Installation Guide). Approximate coverage depends on how wide the nozzle is cut for application.

When filling a gap that is more than 1/4" (.25") wide, we suggest first filling the gap with Soundproofing Rubber.

Where to Apply Acoustical Caulk:

Acoustical caulk should be used around the perimeters of walls, floors and ceiling before tape and spackle is applied. When installing one layer of drywall, caulking should preferably be done between seams. There is no need to caulk the seams when two layers of drywall are installed as long as care is taken to stagger the seams. Additionally, caulk around electrical boxes and recessed lighting before applying the plates. Acoustical caulk should also be used around windows and doors before installing moldings.

Before Starting to Caulk:

Ensure that all surface requiring sealing are cleaned, dried and free of debris.

STEP 1:

How to Install Acoustical Caulk, Figure 1 How to Install Acoustical Caulk, Figure 2Cut ¼” (.25”) hole at the end of the tube, above the threading (Figure 1).

Attach nozzle to cartridge and place cartridge into a standard quart sized caulking gun.

Cut a hole in the nozzle.

Size the hole of the nozzle according to the hole that needs filling, making sure not to exceed 3/8” (.375”)-(Figure 2).

STEP 2:

How to Install Acoustical Caulk, Figure 3 Pull trigger to dispense sealant into joints between walls and adjoining surfaces (figure 3).

When Done Caulking:

Allow 48 hours to dry before applying drywall mud or paint.

Comments about Acoustical Caulk:
I have used this product for years in urban environments to control sound transmision between apartments. I also use this in high-end home theaters to contain the noise within the theater. Couple this with putty pads around the electrical outlets and the right sound-deadening insulation and you're off to a great start on a terriffic sounding room.

Comments about Acoustical Caulk:
I used the Green Glue Acoustical Caulk in the construction of my iso booth, which I built myself! Admittedly, I am no carpenter, so I was left with some (slight) imperfections in the build which allowed significant sound leakage. Green Glue Acoustic Caulk was the perfect solution. The amount of soundproofing provided by the caulk was instantly and significantly noticeable, even before it dried. I was able to plug the gaps in my build, and am still impressed at how well it isolates.

Comments about Acoustical Caulk:
The caulk was reasonably priced and does the job: it stays slightly tacky even after curing for a week. This is good for soundproofing cracks around sheetrock or below baseboards.

Comments about Acoustical Caulk:
This is the stiffer, less runny version of green glue that works for sealing edges and joints. The similar product called "noiseproofing compound" is the version that is more runny and is good to stick sheets of drywall together.

We used this in place of caulk when adding sound board between two residences on a shared wall. It worked really well, filled the gaps completely. The reduction in sound transfer was significant.
