Description

Hat Channels, also known as Metal Furring Channel provide a high-level soundproofing option for decoupling framing from drywall when used in conjunction with our resilient clips as part of a resilient isolation system. For an in depth explanation on decoupling, visit our Decoupling Explained article.

Our premium high quality Hat Channels are 12' long.  Be sure to overlap channels by 6" and screw them together with self-drilling sheet metal screws.   These channels are .25 Gauge with hemmed edges.  They are designed to easily hold 2 layers of 5/8 drywall and can safely hold 3 layers.  They are perfect for use with our RSIC, TMS Silent Clips and Whisper Clips.

To figure out how many channels you need. Calculate your square footage times 6 percent. E.g. for 1,000 square feet you will need approximately 60 channels.

Installation: Use self tapping drill point screws to screw drywall back to channel.

Features:

  • Hemmed leg furring channel, no screws needed for installation.
  • Provides stable support in structural applications.
  • Provides non-combustible furring for interior and exterior walls and ceilings.

If you are looking for Resilient channels without the use of clips (not as effective) please see our RC1 (1 legged) Resilient Channels.

Installation Guide

Furring Hat Channels are designed to insert into sound clips.  NO FASTENERS NECESSARY! Click here for resilient sound clip and channel installation guide.

  •  Insert the furring channel securely into one side of the sound clip.
  •  Compress the second side of the hat channel to squeeze the channel into the sound clip thereby locking the hat channel into place on the resilient sound clip.
  •  Hat channel will remain locked in place regardless of weight of drywall installed over it.
  •  When the length of the channel cannot span the entire wall or ceiling you will need to splice two pieces of hat channel together.  The two channels will need an overlap of a minimum of 6".  The  splice needs to be between two clips since the clips are not designed to hold two pieces of channel.  No additional clips are needed near the splice.  Fasten a pan head steel stud framing screw  on both sides of the channel to provide a stable splice between each piece of channel.
