What is Mass Loaded Vinyl:

Mass Loaded Vinyl adds mass to your walls, ceilings, floors, pipes etc. without compromising on space. It provides instant mass with damping to any location. By adding mass to an existing structure, soundproofing properties are significantly boosted, since soundwaves cannot vibrate the structure easily.

Our 1 lb. Mass Loaded Vinyl has an STC of 26 when hanging by itself. It is the same material and has the same fire rating as other brand names in the field, ensuring compliance with architectural specifications at our low price.

Sample Applications:

  • 1 lb. Mass Loaded Vinyl is primarily recommended for use in floors, walls and ceilings.

  • MLV can be laid on the floor, tacked down and covered with carpet. For better performance see our Premium Carpet Underlayment.

  • Apply to wall and/or ceiling joists using mechanical fastners and cover with drywall.

  • Wrap Pipes with MLV for significant sound reuction, keep in place using plastic ties and/or PVC tape. For better performance see our Noise Damping Pipe Wrap.

  • Attach to outdoor wooden fences using roofing nails or screws with washers.

Mass Loaded Vinyl can be applied to walls, ceilings, floors and structures to create a sound barrier. Mass is a critical component in sound control and works by simply stopping sound from being able to vibrate the structure due to its heavy weight.

Please read through the installation guide before installing your MLV.

STEP 1: MEASURE AND TRIM YOUR MLV

Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Measure your wall from top to bottom. Deduct 1/8” – 1/4” from total height.

Unroll your MLV on the floor. With a utility knife, use a straight edge ruler to cut a square edge evenly through the MLV. {See Figure 1}

You do not need to cut through the material fully, once it is scored, it will come apart easily.

The MLV can also be cut with a heavy duty scissor.

STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR WALL FOR INSTALLATION

Figure 1- How to Install MLV For superior soundproofing results, use Acoustical Outlet Backer Putty Pad around all electrical outlets and other obstacles. {See Figure 2}

STEP 3: APPLYING YOUR MLV

Figure 1- How to Install MLV This step requires the work of two people.

The MLV is applied over the fiberglass installation and beneath the sheetrock.

With the help of another, hold the MLV in place, starting at the upper corner of the wall. Ensure the sheet is straight along the ceiling and is evenly spaced between the floor and ceiling {See Figure 3}

Fasteners: Any type of fastener will work (especially if the MLV will be covered with drywall) we suggest roofing nails or screws with washers, however you can also use a pneumatic cap stapler.

Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Placement: Place fasteners every 8” along the top and bottom plate {See Figure 4} and down the length of the stud.

STEP 4: EXPOSE YOUR ELECTRICAL OUTLET BOXES

Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Be careful not to cover electrical outlets boxes. It is best to expose the outlets boxes as you install each length of MLV.

Find the electrical box in your wall and gently press the MLV against the box. Using a razor blade carefully cut the opening along the edges of the box. Keep this hole tight as possible to the electrical box so that you maintain a good seal. {See Figure 5}

Any extra gaps can be filled with Acoustical Caulk.

Continue as above until your entire wall or ceiling is covered in MLV.

STEP 5: FINISH YOUR SEAMS

Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Where MLV seams fall on a stud, butt pieces against one another on the stud and fasten into place. You can add a strip of PVC Tape on the seam. {See Figures 6 and 7}

We highly recommend that you end all MLV seams on a stud, as free hanging seams may come apart with time.

Figure 1- How to Install MLV
Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Where MLV seams falls between studs, overlap pieces by 2" and tape seams with PVC Tape or similar tape. {See Figure 8}

Figure 1- How to Install MLV

Notch the ends to lay flat. {See Figure 9}

Once all strips of MLV have been applied, drywall can be installed above it and you can be ensured a sound-secure structure! For more information about MLV, contact us or call us at 845-388-1200.

Comments about 1LB Mass Loaded Vinyl - 4' x 25', 100 Square Ft.:
Pretty easy to work with installed easy aloud for 100% coverage fair price. I installed it in a 72 Nova to kill all the outside nose you get in a car that old. It works great and also works with stereo making an average system sound a lot cleaner. When installing in a vehicle I recommend having a blow drier handy, it helps make easier to mold to the body. My only draw back is that I had to buy about 50 sq/ft more than I needed because I could only find it in 100sq/ft rolls. Over all very pleased with the purchase.

Comments about 1LB Mass Loaded Vinyl - 4' x 25', 100 Square Ft.:
I moved into a condo with thin walls and floors. My stereo was annoying my downstairs neighbors, even though I was playing my music at very moderate levels (I'm a mature person, not a loud teenager). I needed to keep the floor from vibrating at an audible bass frequency, so I added a layer of 1LB per sq foot Mass Loaded Vinyl under an area rug of about 10' x 16'. It worked! The additional mass damped the vibrations enough that my downstairs neighbors were happy, and I could play music. My one and only complaint is that the sheets shed a sandy dust that needs to be cleaned up periodically. I had a great experience buying from Trademark. Highly recommended.

Comments about 1LB Mass Loaded Vinyl - 4' x 25', 100 Square Ft.:
I put this on some thin walls between me and a financial tax prep place right next door. We share more than 50 feet of wall between us. Being on good terms with the manager next door I managed to get inside his place when I was having classes both before and after the sound proofing was installed. The noise reduction is phenomenal. even when I have 30 students vocalizing on synchronous strikes you can only hear something when you are almost against the wall on his side. It also was installed super easy.

Comments about 1LB Mass Loaded Vinyl - 4' x 25', 100 Square Ft.:
We ordered and used this product as part of a soundproofing strategy for an upscale behavioral health office in Silicon Valley. This stuff works great! Noticeable reduction in sound transmission when we applied this product. Client loved the results! Client's neighbors loved it too! We had to order a few more rolls to apply to the neighboring unit after they visited our client and saw the results. Product is available in UL listed form, and was a breeze to get past building & planning.

Comments about 1LB Mass Loaded Vinyl - 4' x 25', 100 Square Ft.:
We attached this to a picket fence that stands in front of an exterior air conditioning unit separating it from our patio, doubling it over with some air space in between. There has been about a 12 decibel noise reduction at the patio, frankly making the a/c at most a minor annoyance, if that. I've got 2 other sides as yet undone. I imagine when I finish things will be so quiet I'll have to add some white noise.

Customers Questions and Answers

1) ely: Hello, Do you ship to montreal canada? If yes, is it also a free shipping for every purchase above 75 $ ?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Yes we ship to Canada. Shipping is not free. Please contact us sales@tmsoundproofing with the amount you need and address and we will send you a quote. Thank You.

2) Bill: I do custom car and boat audio installations and would like information on your 1 lb./sq. ft. MLV. I currently use MLV from several different suppliers, one whose MLV is made in China. Other than a slight difference in pliability and adhesion of various tapes thtoe material, I don't notice very little difference between MLV made in China vs. the USA. If your MLV is made in the USA, could you sell me approximately 8-10 sq. ft. to apply to doors on one of my current projects? This would allow me to see how your MLV compares to material from other suppliers. Please let me know by email, or call me

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Bill, Our MLV is manufactured in the USA. We have actually had samples of MLV sent to us from China and we find the one we manufacture here to be of higher quality and no odor therefore we only sell MLV made in the USA. That said this MLV is used by many of our customers in Automobiles, see the reviews, with good results and no complaints of any odor, The smallest size roll we sell is a 4' x 10' 1 pound MLV. Thank You,

3) Steve W: Does this MLV have a smell to it? Would this be good to sound proof exhaust fan housings, and metal ducts along with the fiberglass insulation in the ceiling space?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Steve, Our MLV is USA made from virgin material with no bad odor and yes it would work in your application. Thanks.

4) Paul C: I have a project coming up in Los Angeles. Architect had Acoustiblox 1lb as the spec Is this product comparable to theirs. Do you have any comparison literature? Will need about 8000 square ft. Let me know please. Thanks, Paul Croteau

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Paul, Yes the specs and mainly the STC rating is the same. We sell 100's of thousands of Square Feet of our high quality made in the USA MLV. You can see some of the specs here. Let us know if you need more info. Thanks.

5) Peggy B: Hi. I am trying to mitigate sound coming from the powder room in my house. Can you tell me whether the mass loaded vinyl is supposed to go on both sides of the studs? Meaning, is it supposed to go on the side of the wall that is inside of the powder room as well as the side of the wall that is outside of the powder room?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Peggy. It can go on both sides. If you only want to do one side and you have a choice. Then we recommend doing the side closer to source of the noise.

6) Keith: I would like to know if your 1LB MLV can be used to line a small PVC shed I plan to store and run my gas generator in. I will have a fan recirculating air and a sealed exhaust port, but temperatures may still reach 100 F. There will be no overlayment. Thanks Keith Foran

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Keith, Yes it can be used. You may have a slight rubber smell if temperatures get very hot and the material is exposed.

7) Alex Miotto: I am planning to use MLV to soundproof one of bedrooms to transform it on drummers paradise. Will it be able to hold the lower tones of my drums?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Alex. It would hold some of it. Green Glue is a better performer on the low frequency sounds so you may want to first install another layer of drywall with Green Glue first and then cover with Mass Loaded Vinyl.

8) Bret M: Do you have the ASTM E84 -flame spread for your Mass Loaded vinyl 1#? Thanks

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Brett. Only our Foil Faced 1 pound MLV has the ASTM E84 rating. Someone from the sales department will send that over to you shortly.

9) igor a: I would like to cover a 6' fence tall and 45' long do you have something on 6' tall?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Igor. We do not. You can use the 30 foot long 1 pound MLV rolls and cut them at every 6 feet which will give you 5 equal pieces.
