Description

The Whisper Clip was designed to be the highest performance sound isolation clip on the market, while remaining cost competitive.

How It Works:

Whisper Clips and channels are used in the process of decoupling walls and/or ceilings from the joists, creating what is called a floating wall or ceiling. Decoupling the wall or ceiling helps prevent vibrations from traveling from one side of the structure to the other.

This break in the path greatly reduces the amount of noise that travels from one side to the other in two ways. Firstly, there is no direct connection for sound to travel via the joists as the wall/ceiling is disconnected. Secondly, the wall and ceiling are given resiliency (flexibility), thus greatly reducing vibration (similar to shock springs on a car).hat

Product Features:

Commercial Whisper Clips offer a low priced option with high STC rating, ideal for large-scale soundproofing projects. For smaller projects, or for a higher STC rating, our Standard Whisper Clips are recommended.

Whisper Clips are from the highest performing resilient sound clips available on the market. Its patented design delivers decoupling and resilience that is unmatched by any conventional Resilient Channels. By decoupling the drywall from the ceiling and/or wall, Whisper Clips can achieve an astounding STC of 55 with just one layer of drywall. See Technical Data Sheet for more information.

Whisper Clips were designed with maximum low frequency sound isolation in mind, so walls fortified with whisper clips will eliminate the bass sounds most commonly found with home entertainment and theater systems. Whisper clips cannot be short circuited, unlike resilient clips, ensuring maximum sound absorption at all times. Whisper clips does not require special drywall; regular off the shelf product and readily available hat channel are all you need. Whisper Clips work better and last longer. No need for double stud, staggered stud, or double wall assemblies.

Installation is simple and affordable. See Installation Guide or video tutorial to the right for more information.

How Many Do I Need?

You can space the clips at 48" apart and up to 24" between the channels. As a general rule, figure one Whisper Clip for every 5 square feet (20% of total square footage). However, since more clips are required for the ends of the walls / ceiling, we recommending purchasing at least 23% of total square footage (multiply the total square footage by .23) See Installation Tab to the right for a layout diagram.

Commercial Whisper Clips require a minimum purchase of 100 clips. Don't need so many? Consider our Standard Whisper Clips.

STC Comparison Test Results

Whisper Clips with a Single Layer of Drywall:

Whisper Clips have a higher STC Rating than competitive clips.

As indicated by the graph, Whisper Clips are designed to perform

exceptionally well at low frequencies.

Whisper Clips with a Double Layer of Drywall on Clip Side:

Adding mass to a wall by installing a second layer is always beneficial.

Adding a second layer of drywall to Whisper Clips improves the

transmission loss of the structure more than our competition clips.

Again, the Whisper Clip continues to excel at lower frequencies.

Whisper Clips with a Double Layer on Both Sides:

A double layer of drywall on each side yields the best results

without using additional soundproofing products, such as

Green Glue Noiseproofing Compound to improve transmission loss.

RECOMMENDED LAYOUT PATTERN FOR WHISPER CLIPS:

Applying Whisper Clips

Applying Whisper Clips

See Diagram Above and to the left:

  1. Clips are spaced no further than 48 inches apart horizontally
  2. Hat channel must not be spaced more than 24 inches vertically
  3. Bottom clips must be less than 3 inches from the floor
  4. Top clips must be less than 6 inches from the ceiling

To distribute the weight of the drywall evenly, we recommend that you stagger the Clips on the studs or joists.

How Many Do I Need?

As a general rule, figure one Whisper Clip for every 5 square feet (20% of total square footage). However, since more clips are required for the ends of the walls / ceiling, we recommending purchasing at least 23% of total square footage (multiply the total square footage by .23)

STEP 1: APPLY WHISPER CLIPS

Measure for placement of Whisper Clips using layout guidelines listed above. Mark locations and install clips using appropriate screws, see below.

Note, Install ceiling drywall before walls to allow for a fire stop by butting ceiling drywall to studs, See diagram to the bottom left.

Outermost clips must be spaced at every interval.

Recommended Screws by Stud Type:

  • Wood: Use #8 x 2-1/2” coarse thread screws
  • Steel: Use #8, 10 or 12 x 1-5/8” type S self-tapping screws
  • Concrete: Use 3/16” diameter x 2-1/4” Tapcon or equal anchor screw

STEP 2: APPLY HAT CHANNELS

Cut the hat channel to length using a pair of metal cutting shears. Once cut, fasten the hat channel into the Noiseproofing Clip by inserting the bottom lip first and pulling down to snap the channel into place.

Recommended Hat Channel, See Bottom Left:

  • Size: 25 gauge hemmed edges
  • Depth: 7/8”
  • Width Top: 1 1/4”
  • Width Bottom: 2 1/2”

Overlapping Hat Channels:

Most walls will require you to overlap hat channel, instructions for doing so are as follows:

Overlap 6” of hat channel between two clips. Secure the hat channel with two 7/16” framing screws. 18 gauge tie-wire can also be used.

Compatible Hat Channel can be purchased by selecting link.

STEP 3: APPLY DRYWALL

Place 1/4" shims on the floor to allow spacing between the drywall and the flooring. This ensures decoupling from the floor to make it impossible for vibrations to travel from wall to floor and vice-verse.

Screw drywall in place through hat channel. While hanging your first layer of drywall, space screws on the channel according to your local building code.

Recommended Screws: For the first layer of drywall, use 1-1/4" fine thread drywall screws with any additional layers being fastened with 1-5/8” coarse thread drywall screws. Be sure not to use longer screws as they could penetrate the stud and couple the drywall to the frame, thereby creating a short circuit and reducing the benefits of the Clips.

Be sure drywall is fully installed before removing shims from underneath.

Load Specifications:

Clips are designed to carry hat channels with one or more layers of wallboard attached. To load capacity depends on the spacing and number of clips used.

Standard Clip Spacing: 2 Clips to 1 Hat Channel, 25 Gauge- 45 lb. Maximum Load

When complete, clip and channel will space drywall a full
1-3/4" away from stud.

STEP 4: APPLY ACOUSTICAL CAULK

Be sure to use an acoustical sealant to fill gaps around electrical boxes, windows, doors, and areas below and above sheets of drywall.

Green Glue’s Acoustical Caulk is perfect for this application as it allows flexibility, while stopping sound from transmitting through unsealed areas.

Note, if applying a base board to the drywall, ensure that the base board is attached to the drywall only, and does not connect the wall to the floor, as this will create a short circuit thereby reducing the benefit of the clips.

Customers Questions and Answers

1) Mark K: Can you tell me how much thickness using the commercial whisper clips adds to a sheetrock wall? In other words, what is the total distance between the front of the studs and the back of the drywall? Also, are the commercial whisper clips significantly better in reducing sound transmission than the value clips?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Mark. An inch and a half, between the clip and channel. It is better however not "significantly" so if you are on a tight budged use the value clip otherwise these are an excellent choice and one that we use on large commercial jobs.

2) Matt: Hi, I am very happy and hopeful to have found your product. I would like to test it out before investing to renovate my condo. There is a hum from a generator that I hadn't really heard unfortunately until moving in. From my reading I think decoupling is the best chance of a solution. I would like to try a small test over the existing wall. I would basically like to get a medium size piece of drywall and attach it to the existing wall with the whisper clips system. So I just want to confirm, that 10 clips and 2 hat channels will provide a prototype style test? I appreciate your response. Thanks Matt

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Matt. Not sure that would work. You would only have proper results if you covered the entire area i.e the entire ceiling and/or wall. Additionally we do not recommend installing clips and channels over an existing wall rather directly onto the studs.

3) Matt: I understand proper results, would be to do the entire thing. However if it doesnt work I have just spent a ton of money and effort and have to start again. As I said the sound isnt people, its a generator virbrating through the building frame, which in turn resonates through the wall. if I put my ear to the wall I specifically hear the sound. So how can I 'test' if your product will have any impact? Thanks

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Matt, Unfortunately i don't see a way for you to "test" this on a small area. So, yes, you would not really know the results until after the complete install. Thanks,

4) Dan: I have a number of projects where I will be mounting hat channel to a concrete ceiling or foundation wall. I will have to use anchors (drill each hole etc) , or could I shoot the clips in provided my aim is good. Suggestions please. Thanks

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Dan, If your aim is good you can shoot it in. It usually has a 80 percent retention on the clips that have a shaft. If you use the whisper clip commercial or some others we can suggest you'll have a much easier time as those go right up to the concrete.

5) George: Can the commercial whisper clips be used in metal stud framing?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Yes. These clips can be used on metal studs. Just use proper metal fasteners.

6) Edwin R: How many Commercial Whisper clips do I need for a Room size of 9x10?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: About 20-25

7) AJ: How is the performance of the commercial whisper clips vs the A237 is low frequency performance improved?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: The Commercial Whisper Clips is the highest performing clips in this category and has more resilience due to its shape.

8) Eli: Hi, What is the detail for an "outside corner"? There is a detail for an inside corner but I am trying to figure out how an outside corner stays strong if it is raised off the studs.

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: As long as you have a line of clips on the last stud, the drywall will connect at the end on the channels that are supported by the clips and you would finish off with a corner bead. (your channels take the place of the stud).

9) EDWARD LUTTRELL: When screwing the drywall into the hat channel, can I place the screws anywhere on the hat channel? Should I avoid placing screws where the hat channel connects to the Whisper Clip? Do the number of screws I use to mount the drywall to the hat channel affect the soundproofing ability? Is there a recommended min or max distance between the screws on the hat channel?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Edward. Anywhere on the channel is fine and there is no difference as to the distance and the amounts of screws.
