Door Soundproofing: What Actually Works

You can build a serious wall and still lose the whole battle at the door. A standard interior door is a thin, hollow panel floating in a frame with air gaps on all four sides, and sound treats every one of those gaps as an open window. The encouraging part: doors respond to fairly modest work, and most of the customer questions below were solved without replacing the door at all.

Seal the gaps first

Before adding anything heavy, close the air paths. A perimeter gasket seals the two sides and the top of the door against the stop (see our guide on measuring and installing a perimeter gasket), and an automatic door bottom drops a seal against the floor when the door closes and lifts it when the door swings. Gaps are the reason a room can feel soundproofed with the door shut and still leak conversation into the hallway. Sealing is cheap, and nothing else works until it is done.

Then add mass to the door itself

A hollow core door is a drum. If replacement is an option, a solid core slab is the single biggest upgrade. Where the door has to stay, screwing a layer of MDF or hanging Mass Loaded Vinyl on the face adds real weight, and the questions below cover both routes, including which screws to use and which material performs better for the money. A sealed solid core door with a quality perimeter gasket and automatic door bottom is a different animal from what the builder installed.

The special cases

Fire-rated condo entry doors cannot be modified freely, but they can be sealed. Double and communicating doors need each leaf treated and the meeting gap addressed, and they show up twice in the questions below because they are genuinely tricky. Offices where speech privacy is the whole point, like the therapy suite question below, usually get there with seals plus mass, no construction required.

The mistake we see most

A beautifully soundproofed room with a louvered or undercut door. HVAC returns often rely on that gap under the door, so if you seal it, make sure the room has another air path. And skip the foam panels sold as door soundproofing: absorption tames echo inside a room, it does not stop sound going through a door.

Which blocks more sound on a door: an MDF panel or Mass Loaded Vinyl?

Customer question: Which is more effective for soundproofing a door a 1/2' MDF panel or mass-weighted vinyl? I'm inclined towards the vinyl, since it is more easily removed (and I'm in a rental). But if the soundproofing properties of MDF are much better I would consider using it. Thanks! Trevor

I recommend you use the heavy duty automatic door bottom and the adjustable gaskets. However if you are on a budget you can go with the basic ADB and the basic door gaskets.

How do I soundproof double (communicating) doors?

Customer question: DOUBLE DOORS How do you recommend varying these instructions for a double-door (communicating doors) design, each door in its own leaf (wall) with an air gap? Do the two doors share the same through-jamb (frame)? Or do you separate the frames? If the latter, somehow the frame gap has to be filled, so I am not sure how to do this without acoustically/mechanically coupling the two frames/jambs and thus the walls. Thank you for any advice.

If you are putting the communicating doors onto a decopuled wall, then the way to ensure that the door frame will not couple the wall (same issue by a single door) is to make sure that the drywall is not attached to the door frame in any way. Explaining that in depth is beyond the scope of this Q&A.

How do I quiet a double door leading to a music room?

Customer question: I have a double door leading into my den where I play and record music. I want to improve the sound proofing of my door by first closing the large gap at the bottom. Will you automatic bottoms work with double doors?

What screws should I use to attach an MDF panel to a hollow core door?

Customer question: I am curious about the wood screws you suggest to attach MDF to an existing door (mine is hollow), for soundproofing. Wouldn't the screws serve as channels for sound to penetrate right through the MDF? My understanding is that anything penetrating from one side to the other will serve as a sound channel.

Trademark Soundproofing answer: That is only an issue when you are trying to decouple. However when damping as when you are using Green Glue in between the MDF and door than screwing it tightly together is not an issue and is actually recommended.

What is the difference between mortised, semi-mortised and surface-mounted automatic door bottoms?

Customer question: Hi, Can you please explain the difference between mortised, semi-mortised and surface mounted door bottoms and why one is more effective than the other?

Trademark Soundproofing answer: Hi Ciaran, The mortised (and semi-mortised) are slightly more effective than the surface mounted. As those sit 'behind' the stop molding and gaskets so there is not much leakage at the ends. Surface mounted attaches to the face of the door and does not require you to route out the door vs the the mortised that requires routing. Fully mortised keeps the ADB fully hidden from view.

Can automatic door bottoms be used on exterior doors?

My door surface is not perfectly flat - does that matter for the seals?
