Hat Channels, also known as Metal Furring Channel provide a high-level soundproofing option for decoupling framing from drywall when used in conjunction with our resilient clips as part of a resilient isolation system. For an in depth explanation on decoupling, visit our Decoupling Explained article.

Our premium Hat Channels are custom cut to 8.6' in order to avoid excessive overlapping.  Be sure to overlap channels by 6" and screw them together with self-drilling sheet metal screws.   These channels are .25 Gauge with hemmed edges.  They are designed to easily hold 2 layers of 5/8 drywall and can safely hold 3 layers.  They are perfect for use with our RSIC, TMS Silent Clips and Whisper Clips.

Price is per bundle of 10 hat channels.  There is a minimum order amount of 2 bundles of hat channels.

To figure out how many channels you need. Calculate your square footage times 7 percent. E.g. for 1,000 square feet you will need approximately 7 bundles (70 channels).

[Large orders in the Tri State NY area please call our office for option of ten foot channels and special pricing].

Installation: Use self tapping drill point screws to screw drywall back to channel.

  • Hemmed leg furring channel, no screws needed for installation.
  • Provides stable support in structural applications.
  • Provides non-combustible furring for interior and exterior walls and ceilings.

Furring Hat Channels are designed to insert into sound clips.  NO FASTENERS NECESSARY! Click here for resilient sound clip and channel installation guide.

  •  Insert the furring channel securely into one side of the sound clip.
  •  Compress the second side of the hat channel to squeeze the channel into the sound clip thereby locking the hat channel into place on the resilient sound clip.
  •  Hat channel will remain locked in place regardless of weight of drywall installed over it.
  •  When the length of the channel cannot span the entire wall or ceiling you will need to splice two pieces of hat channel together.  The two channels will need an overlap of a minimum of 6".  The  splice needs to be between two clips since the clips are not designed to hold two pieces of channel.  No additional clips are needed near the splice.  Fasten a pan head steel stud framing screw  on both sides of the channel to provide a stable splice between each piece of channel.

Customers Questions and Answers

1) eddie: is the 49.99 for two bundles of 10 each?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Eddie, That is the price for a single bundle. Thank You

2) Paul: When double hanging drywall to hat channel, do you screw the second layer of drywall to the hat channel? or just to the first layer of drywall? Instructions call out course thread drywall screws, which leads to just screwing to the 1st layer of drywall.

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Paul, Yes the 2nd layer should be screwed back to the channel.

3) Christina: Your site says to Calculate 7% of your square footage for the amount of channels you need. Does this include channel for the ceiling? I have a room aprox. 400 sq feet. One of the walls is not perfectly straight, it protrudes about 6 inches off square. Are these calculations correct? And how many clips would I need?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Christina, It includes any square footage. If you are only doing your ceiling than use the sf of your ceiling. If you are also doing walls then include the sf of the waals and ceiling. Take your entire sf and times 7%. That is the APPROXIMATE amount of channels you need. It may be slightly more or less. For the clips take your entire square footage and times 23% for the approximate amount of clips you need. Thanks.

4) Joe: from phoenix I ordered 5 bundles of hat channel on May 10 at 3pm will they be in phoenix by fri may 13? sincerely, joe

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Joe, That should ship from our West Coast location by May 11th. Ships FedEx Ground which is usually a 2 day ship. Thanks

5) Mark K: Should hat channels on the ceiling be installed 16" on center or 24" on center? I plan to use "Quiet rock" to help reduce the sound further, and it weighs significantly more than regular sheetrock. Same question on the walls. Is 16" on center better than 24" on center?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Mark, I am assuming that you are using resilient sound clips before you install the hat channel. Our recommendation is 24 inches between channels and 48 inches between clips (this is the maximum spacing). The heavier drywall is not an issue . Some contractors worry about the weight and move the clips and/or channel closer, that would work fine, however you will need more material and the sound control is slightly better when spaced further apart. thank You.

6) thomas peterlik: hello - i am trying to get information on what product to use and how much to purchase (also where i can buy it) to soundproof a 300 sq ft basement ceiling --- thanks -

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Thomas, The most common product is insulation, resilient sound clips, had channel and Green Glue damping compound. You would need approximately 70 resilient sound clips, 2 bundles of hat channel, 20 tubes of Green Glue, 2 tubes of acoustical caulk. You can purchase all the products (except for the insulation) directly from our website and shipping is usually free.

7) Peter L: We are self-building in the UK and are looking for a supply of 10 packs your metal furring Hat Channel - do you supply to the UK or have a UK distributor? Thanks

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Peter, At this time we do not have this product available in the UK. We can ship it if it meets our global shipping requirements, however due to the length and weight of this material it will be very costly.
