Description

SonoMatts are made from solid, open-celled Polyurethane, designed using special Eco-friendly materials which cause less global warming emissions and boast improved performance and durability over conventional petroleum-based foams.  Studiofoam meets or exceeds the requirements of the demanding professional in terms of both product quality and testing data (See Product Data Tab for acoustical testing data.)  They boast improved perfomance and durability over conventional petroleum-based foams.

Auralex SonoMatts are cut in the industry standard "eggcrate" style to keep its price low and absorb almost as well as 2" Studiofoam Wedges but it still outperforms competing "premium" brands that cost way more.  It is the perfect product for the budget-conscious consumer!

PLEASE NOTE:  These panels are not fire-rated.  In applications where fire-rating is a priority, please see our Sonex Panels.

Sonomatt panels are painted throughout the foam thus ensuring uniform colors even when cutting the panels is needed to suit your design.   They are easy to install using Foamtak Spray Adhesive or Tubetak Pro Adhesive.  They are flexible and easy to cut preferably with an electric carving knife for optimal visual effect.

Due to the manufacturing process, Sonomatt's dimple pattern will not be square to the edges of the panels, so installing them side by side may not advised from a visual consistency standpoint.  It is a product of choice for consumers who intend to cover their sound control material with acoustical cloth or for low visibility applications such as equipment closets, broadcast facilities and backstage areas.

Cleaning and Maintenance Information:

Since Studiofoam is an open-cell material, we strongly advise against getting it wet.  Any moisture trapped in the cells can mold and create more cleanliness issues, although it will not affect performance.  For cleaning the foam you can dry dust or use an upholstery attachment on a vacuum cleaner.

Installation Guide

For a printable version of Installation Instructions for Auralex Studiofoam Panels, please visit.

  • Prior to mounting, mark desired panel locations on the wall with small pencil marks or masking tape.

  • If you need to cut your Studiofoam, it is recommended to use a straight edge and an electric carving knife.  Don't force the knife; let the blades do the work.

EZ-Stick Pro:

Clean attachment points on the wall surface with Isopropyl alcohol (avoid household cleaners), wipe gently and let dry.  Separate the EZ-Stick Pro Tabs from each other.  Remove one of the paper release liners from the strip.  Apply the tabs on the rear of the panel near the outside edges, orient vertically for maximum holding strength.  Remove the second paper release liner from the backside of the tab, position the panel with the target location on the wall and press firmly to attach.  Use 4 tabs for a 2'x2' Studiofoam panel and 6 tabs for a 2'x4' panel.

Tubetak Pro Liquid Adhesive & Foamtak Spray Adhesive:

Both are contact adhesives, so wait a period of time after applying it to the back of the panel before trying to adhere the panel to the wall.

  • Tubetak Pro (caulk gun required) typically works better if it is spread thin, use a putty knife if needed.  If the adhesive seems to take a while to dry (cure time can be dependent on humidity and other environmental factors), you may consider supporting the panel in place with a T-pin or finish nail.

  • If you are using Foamtak (US only), hold the can 12 to 18" away from the Studiofoam and shake the can from side to side to yield a spider web pattern.  For best results apply to both surfaces, allow 45 seconds to tack and then apply.  For a more temporary bond apply the Foamtak to one surface only.  Storing the Foamtak upside down between applications may allow a more consistent spray pattern.  You can use the Studiofoam carton as spray shields for a cleaner installation.  Stacking two Studiofoam cartons can provide a convenient work surface.

TEMP Tabs:

TEMP Tabs are a semi-permanent mounting kit that is a great way to temporarily install your Studiofoam.  Removing the tabs causes some minimal damage to walls that may require spot repairs.

Other Mounting Options:

  • T-Pins or Finish Nails can be used to tack the panels in place for a quick installation with minimal wall damage.  Sometimes larger nails or panel movement can cause the foam to tear, so this is usually best as a temporary installation method.

  • Studiofoam can be mounted to a backing (such as pegboard, Corex, cardboard, plastic, plywood, etc) before installing it on a wall.  This assembly allows for added durability when relocating/repurposing Studiofoam panels.

Notes:

  • EZ-Stick Pro Tabs may not adhere well to some vinyl wallpapers.  Apply to surfaces above 50° F (10° C).  Adhesive could soften and lose adhesion above 105º F (40° C).  EZ-Stick Pro Tabs are considered permanent and will damage the wall surface when removed.

  • Both Tubetak Pro and Foamtak are considered permanent installations.  Removing a panel after the adhesive has cured can result in some damage to the Studiofoam and the mounting surface.  Auralex is not responsible for any damage to walls, floors, ceiling or the overall structure that occurs doing installation or removal of our products.  Try using a flat edge knife to carefully scrape the panel away from the wall to minimize tearing, and then use a citrus-based adhesive remover.
