Preparing for a DIY Project

Your soundproofing project is important and, as such, you want to do your best to make sure it is completed properly from start to finish. If you’ve never completed a do-it-yourself style project before you may feel a bit overwhelmed, and that’s OK. You should, however, take a step back and ask yourself a few questions before getting started to ensure your sound proofing project goes off without a hitch.

  • Is your soundproofing project a stand-alone project or is it part of an overall renovation project? If the latter, are you capable of completing the entire project yourself or should you seek outside advice or consultation? Will you need to hire a contractor or specialist to get things done?
  • Every town has different ordinances. Building a sound barrier may seem like a simple task but if it involves installing new drywall, moving the placement of a door, or adding new windows you may be talking about a much more complicated task. Will your town require you to have a permit for the work you’re completing? Find out in advance to avoid complications and administrative fines and penalties.
  • Do you really know what you’re doing? Don’t attempt to install soundproofing materials or perform any other type of technique without learning about it first. Take some extra time to read a book, watch a video, or ask for professional advice at store demonstrations before attempting your own project. The more confident you are about the procedure the better your project will turn out.
  • Do you really have a good sound proofing plan? Will the techniques and material’s you’ve chosen really get the job done or are you guessing? Are you making a bunch of small changes when you would better benefit from one large project? You might benefit from putting off your project until you can give it complete attention instead of wasting your money on a partial project.
  • Should you hire a professional? If you’re nervous about doing your own soundproofing project, think Green Glue and drywall look like foreign objects, or simply don’t have the time to dedicate to doing a good job then you might want to consider hiring a professional to to your soundproofing work for you. There’s no shame in admitting you can’t do something on your own – especially if you want it done right the first time.

The feeling of pride you’ll feel after completing your first DIY project will be incredible – especially if you’re trying to soundproof your home to improve your quality of life. Good luck!
