Reclaiming Your Life

If sound has been a constant problem in your life you may have a hard time reconditioning yourself after your sound problems are solved. You may, on the other hand, find that the same type of noise bothers you in some situations and not in others. This is a completely normal psychological reaction. Sensitization is your ability to become aware of the things around you – including noise -and it affects everyone differently.

Even after you correct your soundproofing problem you may find that you’re having trouble realigning your thought process – teaching yourself that the noise you’ve conditioned yourself to react to is no longer there. In the past you’ve spent time not only listening to various sounds but thinking about them, constantly reminding yourself that you have a problem and wondering how you’re going to solve it. These thought processes took time and focus from your life and now, as you lie in bed in a quiet house, you’ll find yourself thinking about the sound again – even if it isn’t there.

So what do you need to do? Every time you find yourself looking for the noise that is no longer there you’ll need to stop and tell yourself that it is gone. Remind yourself that you have corrected the problem by creating an effective sound barrier and then release the thought, going on about your business as if nothing had happened.

Easier said than done, right? There are a few things you can do to aid yourself. The first is to address the stress in your life, especially the stressed that was caused by constant noise. Over time, stress can build and you can develop sensations of anxiety when you begin to think about the sounds that bother you. Just because those sounds are gone does not mean the stress associated with them will immediately disappear. You’ll need to take steps to teach your body that its natural stress reaction is no longer necessary.

After you reduce the stress in your life you’ll want to take a look at the way you sleep at night. Chances are your previous soundproofing problems caused you to have trouble getting to sleep at night, also forcing you to make modifications that you normally might not have. Take some time to reevaluate your sleep patterns and you may quickly discover that your soundproofing efforts have given you the ability to sleep more comfortably.

Sound control is an excellent solution to noise problems but you have to remember that your body has made certain adjustments to deal with the sound and you must now teach your body how to get back into a regular routine. Before you know it, your life will be exactly as it was before your sound problems occured!
