What NOT To Do: DIY Acoustic Foam

We know that people are constantly looking for inexpensive alternatives to soundproofing. The materials seem expensive but compared to the cost of doing something incorrectly and having to pay to do it again, you’re really not going to break the budget to do things right the first time.

This young man is encouraging people to use cut up mattress toppers attached to their walls to help absorb sound – in his case, in his home music studio. His ideas of making sure the floors are carpeted are good, but – cut up mattress toppers?

Mattress toppers are made of foam and as such are still porous. They may help a little bit but they’re going to look pretty bad (especially painted) and the end result is not going to make the person on the other side of the wall – the one who does not want to hear your music – very happy at all. In this instance, this guy could have picked up some ¬†drywall and Green Glue for only a small amount more, grabbed a friend or two, and done this much more effectively in just a day.

Check the video out here.

We’re open to your thoughts, though. Would you do something like this? Have you? Did it help or not?
