Egg Crates are NOT Good for Soundproofing

We’ve talked about using egg crates in a soundproofing project on this blog before but we want to bring this subject up one more time. Please remember that egg crates do NOT make great sound proofing material.

The thought is that the distinct design of an egg crate will cause sound waves to bounce around, making them unable penetrate the crates and cause noise in the space you are protecting. What most people forget, however, is that egg crates, whether they are foam or cardboard, are made of an incredibly porous material. No matter what you do, sound is going to pass through.

The other day we read an interesting article about using a combination of egg crates, balled up newspaper, and duct tape to soundproof a room. This combination of materials doesn’t even sound like it would be effective – and for good reason. Avoid this type of material at all costs!
