Soundproofing Don’ts: Mattresses

Today we’re going to take a look at another huge “DON’T” when it comes to soundproofing. Do not, under any circumstance, attempt to soundproof a room in your home by nailing old mattresses to the wall. It’s a myth – it’s a mistake – and it doesn’t work. Plus – it looks terrible!

Ok, so the theory behind wanting to use old mattresses may seem a bit logical. They’re thick, so some people think the mattresses will add insulation. The problem is that there is no feasible way of sealing the mattresses together to ensure that no sound was able to pass through a seam or open edge.

To make matters worse, the mattresses you nail to the wall will eventually start to smell pretty bad. No expert will ever recommend nailing a mattress to the wall, nor will anyone with any level of soundproofing knowledge. If you want to soundproof your room you’ll need to invest in a better material (and one that’s a bit more eye appealing) like mass loaded vinyl.
