Description

This sound rated Automatic Door Bottom will provide an excellent seal to the gap between the door and floor. The aluminum casing is fitted with a self-extinguishing and oil resistant solid neoprene insert which serves as its primary seal. Additionally, the interior of the aluminum anodized casing is filled with rubber for extra protection.

The rubber used as the seal is made of high quality neoprene to ensure many years of use out of this automatic door bottom.

This product can be mounted as a semi mortised or surface mounted application, as shown in the illustrations. It is non-handed and can be applied directly over the floor surface or above a doorway saddle, though a saddle is recommended for higher sound control (A saddle is highly recommended when the door bottom is sealing onto carpet). Available in two anodized finishes and in standard stock sizes. Installation instructions and screws provided.

Not sure what size you need? See How to Measure for an Automatic Door Bottom.

Custom Sizes: Custom sizes up to 60" can be purchased through our office. Please contact us at 845-388-1200 to purchase.

How it Works:

This product utilizes a concealed flat mechanism which is activated by the pressure of closing the door (The brass nut at the head gets pushed in by the door jamb and that lowers the seal).  The high quality neoprene rubber seal drops, filling gaps up to .75”, upon the closing of door to create a tight seal and raises up automatically when the door is opened to ensure smooth door operation. Our door bottoms have been tested through 5 million cycles and provide the same excellent quality as our mortised automatic door bottom. For more information, see About Automatic Door Bottoms.

Automatic Door bottom can be trimmed on the field up to 3-4" depending on the size ordered, see installation guide tab.

Note: We recommend trying to keep the gap between the door and the floor at no more than 3/8" for maximum sound sealing. Larger gaps can be treated with a door saddle, or an added wood strip to the underside of the door.

This model is recommended for interior residential doors. For situations requiring a better seal please see our Heavy Duty Automatic Door Bottom.

This model can be mounted to the surface of the door with screws. Additionally you can notch out the door and install the door bottom flush with door for a semi-mortised application. There is also a fully mortised model available which will completely hide the automatic door bottom from view, this will require routing out the bottom of the door. Semi mortised and mortised style will give you a better seal than surface mounted. Click here to view the Mortised Basic Automatic Door Bottom.

Installation Guide

Click here for a Printable Copy of How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom.

Automatic Door Bottoms are available with three mounting options: Surface Mounted, Semi-Mortised and Fully Mortised. A surface mounted application can be applied without removing the door from its hinges. For a semi-mortised, if the rabbet in the door is cut-out already, the door does not need to be removed. For a fully mortised application the door should be removed before starting.

STEP 1: SIZING YOUR DOOR BOTTOM:

Once your door is ready for installation you need to determine the size required for your door bottom:
  • For a Surface Mounted Application: Measure the distance between the two stop moldings, or if a perimeter door gasket is applied,
measure the distance between the two installed gaskets, then minus 1/8-1/4"” (.125”) from the total distance. That is the size needed for your door bottom.
  • For a Semi-Mortised and Fully Mortised Application: Measure your door from side to side; that is the measurement needed for your automatic door bottom.
For visual presentation see How to Measure for an Automatic Door Bottom.

How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom- Figure 1

Once you have determined the size needed, if necessary, trim your door bottom.
Use a chop saw or table saw to create a perfectly straight cut.

Note, Only trim opposite the actuating plunger, brass nut. (Trimming from the brass nut side will ruin your ADB).

How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom- Figure 1 You can trim from the edge up to one inch of the screw in the side wall of the ADB.

STEP 2: PREP FOR ATTACHING AUTOMATIC DOOR BOTTOM:

How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom- Figure 3

Surface Mounted and Semi-Mortised models need to be applied to the push side of the door only (the side with the door stops-see Figure 3).
The actuating plunger needs to be applied to the hinge side of the door for all applications.

Place the automatic door bottom against the door

Once you have the automatic door bottom leveled and positioned correctly, with a pencil or marker mark
where the attachment screws need to be drilled.

STEP 3: ATTACHING THE AUTOMATIC DOOR BOTTOM:

How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom- Figure 4

To make installation easier you can drill a pilot hole which will ensure you attach the door bottom to the correctly marked spot (see Figure 4).
With the screws provided, screw in the automatic door bottom.

In some models, a plate is provided for the hinge side of the frame. This will protect the door frame from getting worn down by
the actuating plunger. If provided, attach to corresponding point on the frame.

STEP 4: TESTING YOUR AUTOMATIC DOOR BOTTOM:

How to Install an Automatic Door Bottom- Figure 1

Now that the door bottom is attached, test the door bottom by opening and closing the door to ensure there is a full seal.
If the seal does not come down far enough twist the brass nut out, if it seals too tight twist the brass nut in (see Figure 5).

Once you have followed through with all the instructions your Automatic Door Bottom is good to go! Enjoy years of quality sound, draft and light infiltration control with your new door bottom.

Comments about Automatic Door Bottom - Basic:
There are air gaps on either end of the device, although they are small. I bought a different brand 15 years ago that works much better, but I don't know what this other brand is. I may try to plug the gaps with some foam or get rid of it.

Comments about Automatic Door Bottom - Basic:
We installed it on 3 doors in our small music school. At least 50% noise reduction. Didn't have to adjust or service it in 3 years. Very sturdy and well made. A bit tricky to install so you might need to get a good handyman. Highly recommend overall. And at least 2 of our teachers also bought them for their own homes now.

Comments about Automatic Door Bottom - Basic:
This product is great for noise reduction and sealing off a room. I used this in combination with a sound proof door and door gaskets. The result made a measurable difference in sound reduction. The door bottom has been installed for a couple years now and there is no sign of wear or damage. Looks to be good for a very long time. There was a tiny gap on one side which was required to get the door to shut, but it was easy to cover with an open cell foam strip. The room is used for work, so I would not recommend this on a bedroom door in the house, unless you don't mind a clunky look. Overall really great product, works well and does what it's supposed to. No issues over two years of daily use.

Comments about Automatic Door Bottom - Basic:
Combined with a door gasket, provides effective soundproofing for an acoustic drum studio inside our house. Make sure you measure your door carefully and read all the info on how to measure your door. Don't forget to allow for the door gasket thickness when submitting your measurements. Note that you can specify exact measurements for cutting- this is nice if you don't have a chop saw.

Comments about Automatic Door Bottom - Basic:
I purchased this to soundproof to nurseries. It greatly improved both of my children's sleeping is they are very light sleepers. Our living room is right down the hall and often the TV or noises in the kitchen would wake them. The only cons are the diagrams in the set up instructions. I am an average DIY it made a mistake on the first one I installed. This mistake was related to how it lines up to the end of the door and makes the bottom go down to make a solid seal on the floor

Customers Questions and Answers

1) Joel R: I need to see how this product works!

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Joel, We will have videos of this in the next few months. You can subscribe to our You Tube Channel to be informed when that goes live. https://www.youtube.com/c/Tmsoundproofing In the meantime we have tried to give clear explanations and images here. http://www.tmsoundproofing.com/About-Automatic-Door-Bottoms-for-Soundproofing.html

2) Will: Hey am I able to order this cut to 34" and 10/16ths? Also how well does this attach to metal doors?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: Hi Will, You can order a 36" and cut it down to that size. You can also order ab 34.5" as that extra 1/8" can usually be used for the swing and brass knob. We also leave extra neoprene sticking out at the ends to compensate. If you want 10/16" exactly you can request that and we will try to cut to that size specifically however there is an +/- 1/8" tolerance. This attach to metal doors with no problems.

3) Terry W: I'd like a product designed for 32" interior doors to reduce sound transmission. Do you supply this product in a size appropriate for this width door? If so, what are the product number(s)?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply:

Hi Terry, All our door products can be custom cut to any size you wish, whether it is the soundproof door panel or the automatic door bottom. If you need any help please give us a call.

4) Anthony G: We ordered part # DSZ351D36 is there supposed to be a locking key for this model? We are missing something that should push the bottom sweep down to the floor. We didn't received any end caps. Please advise.

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: There is no locking key. It should have a brass nut sticking out at one end. That will get pressed into the door jamb and lower the seal. If you are still having issues please give us a call at 845-388-1200

5) Alex J: Can the 30" automatic door bottom be trimmed to fit a 24" door? Also any recommendations on how to make a set of 24" french doors lockable?(for an office)?

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: No it cannot. You can call us to order a custom 24" size. Each door can get it's own Automatic Door Bottom. What do you mean by "lockable"?

6) Dave: Do i need to purchase the door jam seals as well for the bottom seal to work correctly? Or can i buy just the bottom seal and let it close against the existing jam.

Trademark Soundproofing Reply: The bottom can work on it's own.
