Running an eCommerce site gives you some keen insight into human behavior. In general there are 2 easy types to classify. The selfish (the whole world owes me everything) and the nice people. E.g someone is searching are for information on how to soundproof their home. They come to my site read some eye opening articles that are written in a clear sensible fashion. They decide they would like to speak to someone so they call describe their project and glean some more great advice for their specific needs. 2 weeks later they decide they are ready to purchase some soundproofing material so here goes the cross roads. The nice people who think about other people take a quick look around just to make sure that they are being priced fairly and then go back to purchase from the company that helped them. They realize that the effort invested in writing the articles maintaining a nice website, the cost of the phone advise (wages and phone lines) is worth reciprocating and the way they pay back is by at least buying the material from the one who helped them. The selfish people could not care less that they spent hours on your site, called 5 times and took up from your precious time, if they can now find the same material for a dollar cheaper they’ll buy it elsewhere. Have no fear the nice people are not losing out the world is run from above and everyone gets paid back as to how they act.

2012-02-15 12:21:41

Abe: The problem is the sound jumping the top of the wall and coming through the ceiling. You have to continue the wall all the way up (to the roof) double drywall with Green Glue acoustic caulk on the top and sides.

2012-02-15 12:24:11

Visitor: The space above the ceiling is a mechanical plenum and it will be very difficult to build a complete wall that does not have voids for existing mechanical ductwork, plumbing, wiring, etc. Any other suggestions?

Abe: You can remove the drop ceiling and do a double drywall with GG ceiling (hung from the grid) I doubt that you’ll agree to do that

Abe: Not sure. I thought I was the right guy

2012-02-15 12:31:31

Visitor: A lot of the problem has to do with the expectations of the tenants which I am guessing are not achievable without significant expense. Are there suggested details on your website for all of your assemblies?

2012-02-15 12:34:50

Abe: Sure. Look on the left side under “Articles” there is a fly out menu there. Again I am almost positive that your problem is as I described it and the 2 options are either to build the wall up or do a proper ceiling. In this case the tenants may have a point. I have one more suggestion for you and that is to lay down the 1 pound Mass Loaded Vinyl on top of the drop ceiling providing that you can get continuous coverage acroos each room.

2012-02-15 12:39:31

Visitor: And that is to cover the entire ceiling of each room?

Abe: Yes. Green Glue walls have tons of STC lab tests and the MLV I told you about has a STC of 27 however that is when it is free standing it is less when it is together with other materials and there is no real test data on that.
You: Another layer of half inch drywall with Green Glue Damping Compound in between.

Guest: Can the MLV be used on the studs before drywall goes on?

You: Yes.

Guest: Would that be better than 2 layers of wallboard?

You: ABout the same when using the wallboard without GG. With GG the 2 wallboards are better.

Guest: Very good. Thank you very much.

You: Your Welcome

You: Hi how can I help you?

Guest: Hey there, I’m trying to soundproof a bedroom, specifically one wall which is adjacent to the neighbor’s bedroom

Guest: Basically they like to chat until the early hours of the morning and I’m trying to block the sound out, just wondering which is the way to go

You: Easiest and most effective would be to add another layer of drywall with Green Glue Damping compound. See this article http://www.tmsoundproofing.com/soundproofing-rooms-walls-ceilings.html If you have an open air space (e.g. attic) over the 2 apts. then you would need to treat your ceiling as well in the same way.

Guest: I guess I’m looking for a cheaper option, one that doesn’t involve reconstructing a wall etc

Guest: Or if not cheaper, at least simpler

You: Other than that you won’t get good results. You can try hanging a sheet of MLV on the wall but in the end the way I wrote to you is the right way.

Guest: ok thanks

We have an interesting new idea. From Chats and emails with people looking for soundproofing advise we can build a great database of sound control FAQ’s and advise that will be useful for everyone out there. At TMsoundproofing were all about educating anyone who is interestedin proper sound control technique yet keeping our common sense intact. What I mean by that is similar to many new laws and legislation that are put into effect because they make sense when your sitting behind a comfortable mahogany desk in a plush carpeted room. However out in the real world it just is unrealistic and a huge burden to people. Same goes for many “scientific sound companies”. Giving you lab results and all kinds of advise of keeping a space between every wall, floor and ceiling, Ripping down walls to change insulation etc. We have been and still are out in the field. We know about construction, messes and extra expenses. Our advise takes it all into account. Start reading and I am sure you’ll agree.

Today my belief in Humanity was somewhat restored. A customer who picked my brain a week ago for 20 minutes and stated “I will be back to buy the material from you as you were so helpful” actually called back today to place a large order of soundproofing materials.

Our society has become so used to demanding superior customer service that they many times forget basic human manners. They will send an email on how to soundproof this and that. I will spend time responding and sending attachments etc. many times they will not even respond with a basic Thank You. Is my time and knowledge not worth the decency of a Thank You? Or they will call a few times and sometimes take up lots of my busy time and then go shopping to see if they can find the product for a few dollars less.

That is why today’s (and many other great customers) order was so heartening to see that yes there may be some people who can only think about their own self and suck you for your knowledge and time and not feel the least bit need to reciprocate. However there are just as many if not more great people out there that are human beings and a human being is defined thus when he can raise himself above animalistic being which means thinking about another person!
