Soundproofing Your Way To A Good Night's Sleep
Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of peace and quiet, right?
Well, if you have noisy children or neighbors - even if you live on a street where all the neighborhood teenagers race their cars - chances are you haven’t been getting very much shut-eye. In fact, a recent study confirmed that one of the biggest sleep-killers comes from nighttime noises that can be caused by everything from your children's television sets or that neighbor who doubles as an aspiring rock star.
Let’s face it – in this hectic world, our sleep is more important than ever. It’s during our sleep when our body recovers from the daily stresses of the day, fights off illness and relaxes before revving up for another schedule-packed day. If you want to reclaim your sleep without having to move to the middle of an isolated field, then invest in soundproofing your bedroom. Soundproofing isn’t as expensive as it may sound. With just a little forward planning, you’ll be able to get the sleep that you deserve – and at a price that won’t break the bank!
Following is a short description of how to sound proof a room. For a more in depth understanding into the science of noise reduction browse our articles on the sidebar. Start with our Soundproofing Basics article. Additionally feel free to contact our office, as the only soundproofing company that installs the products we sell for residential and commercial customers, you can be sure that we will be able to understand and advise you on your particular project.
To begin with, attack the main source of your sleep-deprived woes: your walls and ceilings. If you are in the building process of your home, insulate all walls that are of concern. Next use our Whisper Clips to create a floating wall and ceiling system, with one layer of drywall you can achieve an astounding STC of 56. You can achieve better results by installing 2 layers of drywall with Green Glue on the floating wall. If price and/or labor is of concern you can simply use 2 layers of drywall (we recommend 5/8 inches thick) with Green Glue in between which can give you an STC of 52, get even better results by simply adding our Integrity Sound Tape to the studs before applying the drywall. Additionally, Green Glue is one of the most cost-effective and easy-to-use soundproofing tools available that can be used over existing walls and ceilings; no wonder it’s one of our most popular products!
As sound has a tendency to find its way through cracks and openings, be sure to seal all perimeter gaps and outlet boxes (and recessed lighting cans) with a proper acoustical caulk like our SilenSeal caulk.
Next, make sure that you install a solid wood door (MDF is fine) seal the door with professional door gasket and a sound stopping door bottom (these products will be available shortly on our website, and can be ordered over the phone). Floors can let in a great deal of sound, especially when a majority of the noise is coming from within your own house. Carpet is a great sound absorber when compared to hardwood and tile. We always treat floors by installing 2 layers of sub floor, sound board and Green Glue in between then treating the ceiling below with Whisper Clips and Green Glue. If your floors are creaking try the Squeak Eliminator Kit.
As you can see, sound control doesn’t have to be complicated if you have the right soundproofing products. At Trademark Soundproofing, we pride ourselves in offering our valued clients a wide array of top-quality products that not only battle those nasty noises that are keeping you awake at night – they also are user-friendly and easy on your wallet!
